What we call “modern” has, as yet, many interpretations. It is a style of our times which is developing. There is nothing static about it. Year by year it has changed and will change. It is an idea, a way of life taking form, and now is becoming something we are adapting to our use more and more. Its lines in architecture as in furniture are simple, to some people harsh and uncompromising. But this simplicity is leading us to clear away a lot of useless clutter, to see the value of plain surfaces in furniture as well as in walls usually of wood veneers, more light given by larger window openings, and more space given by fewer partitions.

Though not possible for all of us to follow, I show here modern interiors which begin with the building, not the furnishings. Such windows, interior finish, drapery arrangement, blond furniture, and wall – to – wall carpeting express both simplicity and the often misunderstood functionalism of this style. The windows are stationary with ventilation through the door.

Draw curtains of casement cloth matching the wall color are importance in this mono – dramatic color scheme. Cove lighting gives general illumination. It is a matter of choice whether plain fabric, matching or contrasting with the wall, is used, or a bold pattern to suit the color scheme. The matching plain color makes the room seem larger.
