Fireplace and window
A detail of the corner of the room left, below. Don’t overlook the economy of space and having a place of their own for your books, radio, record player, and records. Here they are all ready to be used and also a very decorative part of a pleasant room. The space occupied by the chimney, or the thickness of stone walls, often permits a deep, recessed window, bookcases opposite page, and the arrangement of shelves and cupboard shown here.
Over the mantel
There are all sorts of things to do. Mirror; one large picture; or has here, use a group of four small pictures framed alike. There are many inexpensive prints to be found in gift shops, even chain stores, which you could frame yourself. On the shelf, as well as the brass box, brass jars holding ivy could be an addition. Note that end table is the height of chair arm.
Fireplace and window
Why not have, today, a fireplace corner like this? Framed samplers, old candlestick, and china roosters are suitably placed on the simple mantel shelf. The window may have ruffled curtains to the sill tied back as illustrated. Cotton fabric in any old – fashioned small pattern, or a strip, plaid or plain gingham may be used. Such materials cost little, wear well, and suit the place with their old – fashioned air.
